You Can’t Take It With You

From your first breath to your final moment, everything you hold in your hands is temporary. YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU! At the end of your life, the big question isn’t what you have accumulated—but whether you’re in right standing before God when none of it matters anymore. Scripture reminds us that what truly matters is not what we gain on earth, but who we belong to for eternity.

All of us come into the world with nothing and leave with nothing.

In Job 1:21, he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked shall I return there.
The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away;
Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

Listen, you came into this world, naked and with nothing, you’ll leave this world either as dust after being cremated or with the clothes put on you in a funeral home for your coffin and with NOTHING ELSE!

Your house, your cars Your collections, and any and all of your material possessions will stay around when you’re in the ground. Eternity is too long to be wrong. You better be right with the LORD before you are put in the soil! With that in mind, don’t be frustrated when you see the unrighteous, people that are not saved achieving well!

Psalm 49:16-20 NLT says,

So don’t be dismayed when the wicked grow rich
and their homes become ever more splendid.
17 For when they die, they take nothing with them.
Their wealth will not follow them into the grave.
18 In this life they consider themselves fortunate
and are applauded for their success.
19 But they will die like all before them
and never again see the light of day.
20 People who boast of their wealth don’t understand;
they will die, just like animals.

As the saying goes “You never see a U-Haul behind a hearse”. You can’t take your material possessions with you when you die.

Romans 14:12 says, So then each of us shall give account of himself (or herself) to God.

When it comes to your position, your titles, your bank account, your education, your awards, NONE of that will matter when you stand before God and give an account of yourself. I don’t care if you’ve won a Super Bowl, the World Cup, the Masters Golf Tournament or you were the Heavy Weight Champion of the World, The World may make a big deal about it, but absolutely NONE of it will matter to God! All He will care about is did you receive His Son as Lord and Savior and did He know you, did you have a relationship with Him.

Some Christians make the assumption that if a person has numerous material possessions that it is a sign of God’s blessing

Psalm 145:9 (AMP) says, The Lord is good to all,
And His tender mercies are over all His works [the entirety of things created].

However, the REAL blessing is knowing the LORD! In Him is life, and, if you are saved and know Him, you will spend eternity with Him, that’s the real blessing!

No matter how much you possess or how much money you make, you have NOTHING if you don’t have Jesus!

This is confirmed in Revelation 3:15-20 (NIV), Jesus warns you and then welcomes you, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of My mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with Me.”

  •        Jesus says, you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! He would rather you be cold, indifferent and openly rejecting Him or hot, filled with love and zeal for Him than to be a lukewarm hypocrite, professing to follow and know Him, but only being a Christian in name only, not truly belonging to Him.
  •        So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of My mouth. Jesus essentially states that this kind of behavior revolting to Him to the point that He wanted to vomit.
  •        You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. The things you can see and buy are temporal and will never be more valuable than pursuing God and doing those things that have eternal value and advance His Kingdom. Having money and possessions is not a bad thing, but they only offer temporary fulfillment and mean nothing without a close, loving relationship with Christ. Seek to find your true riches in Christ instead of making achievement, comfort and luxury the primary focus of your life.
  •        But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. Attaining material possessions is a waste of time and valueless compared to pursuing and being in a right relationship with God.

In Matthew 7:23 in the Amplified, He says, And then I will declare to them publicly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me [you are banished from My presence], you who act wickedly [disregarding My commands].’

Jesus makes it clear, without Him, you really have nothing! And your material items have no eternal value, you can’t take it with you!

Jim Elliot profoundly said “He is no fool who gives away what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.”

Giving up temporary or material things, which are ultimately impermanent, to gain something eternal, like a relationship with God and spending eternity with Him in heaven, is the wisest thing you can do and You CAN take that with you!

The Bible is not just to be read and believed, it is wisdom, truth and knowledge and IT IS TO BE LIVED! Christianity is a lifestyle. In Him is life (see John 1:4), be accountable, be correctable and let the Holy Spirit sanctify you and edify you.
