The Most Important Debt You Owe Is To Love Others

As a Christian, you should not be in financial debt or “owe anyone anything,”. Proverbs 22:7 says, “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender”. Your financial obligations should be paid when they are due.

But that is not what I’m talking about here. What I’m talking about is what Romans 13:8 (NIV) says, which is Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

As a Christian, the only perpetual debt you owe is to love others as you have already been loved. We are permanently in debt to Jesus for the love He so sacrificially gave and we, as followers of Christ, received at the cross. Colossians 2:13-15 [NLT] says, 13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for He forgave all our sins. 14 He canceled the record of debt that stood against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. 15 In this way, He disarmed[a] the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory over them on the cross. Jesus paid a sin debt for us that we could never pay and His love will ALWAYS be infinitely greater than ours. With that said, the least we can do is ‘repay’ His love by keeping The Great commandments to love Him and to love others.

Matthew 6:12 says, “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors”. Just as there are no conditions on forgiving others, there are no conditions on loving others. We are to display an unconditional love and it does not have anything to do with what another person does or doesn’t do! It’s not waiting for someone to change. You are responsible for your behavior and no matter what someone says or does, you get to CHOOSE your response.

Christians have a constant obligation to love others and this obligation never stops. Biblical love, is not necessarily a feeling, but is an action that is of benefit to and seeks the best and looks out for the well-being of another, this includes caring about their eternal destination. Actions lead and feelings follow.

This love includes speaking the truth in love, if a person you are close to is in sin, love them enough to speak the truth to them. In any relationship, truth without love is mean and love without truth is meaningless.

In John 13:34 (NIV) Jesus said “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

Jesus has spoken, Do it as unto the Lord! He is more than worthy!
