The Bible defines marriage as a lifelong, sexually exclusive, God-ordained covenant between a man and a woman. It is a public social union that is voluntary and serves as a foundation for human life.
Some characteristics of a biblical marriage include:
Faithfulness, Sacrificial love, Joy, Intimacy, Children, and Stewardship of the earth.
The Bible also says that marriage is modeled after the relationship between God and his people, and between Christ and his church. In a marriage, the husband is to be a self-sacrificial leader and the wife is to be in submission to him.
